Sanjo Summa is a signature performance series of the Seoul Donhwamun Gugakdang, dedicated to exploring the essence, lineage, and evolving possibilities of Sanjo.
Sanjo is a distinctive genre of Korean traditional music in which a single instrumentalist unfolds a deeply expressive musical narrative through a gradual acceleration of rhythm. Rooted in improvisation and individuality, each lineage of sanjo reflects the artistic voice and interpretation of its performer.
Since its launch in 2021, Sanjo Summa has brought together master performers, emerging artists, and audiences to encounter sanjo in its many forms. The program presents both the depth of tradition and the spirit of innovation through diverse stages including solo performances, homage concerts to great masters, ensemble explorations, and talks that illuminate the musical and historical contexts of sanjo.
In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Seoul Donhwamun Gugakdang, the 2026 edition of Sanjo Summa unfolds under the theme “Expansion.” Building upon the accumulated legacy of sanjo, the festival looks toward new artistic horizons—inviting audiences to experience how tradition continues to grow, resonate, and transform in the present.
